How $\text{CO}_2$ Extinguishers Work

Storage under Pressure: Manufacturers compress carbon dioxide inside a heavy-duty steel or aluminum cylinder. Inside, the gas transforms into a liquid state.
Discharge Phase: Squeezing the discharge lever releases the liquid. As it flows through the discharge horn, the liquid rapidly depressurizes and expands into a cold gas.
Oxygen Displacement: Carbon dioxide gas is denser than atmospheric oxygen. It blankets the burning material, deprives the fire of oxygen, and smothers the flames almost instantly.
Thermal Cooling: The rapid expansion of $\text{CO}_2$ gas creates an intense freezing effect at the nozzle. This sudden drop in temperature absorbs heat directly from the fire.
