Description

Resistance Temperature Detectors PT100 Sensor :

The PT100 temperature sensor with an IP68 KNE terminal head is a robust industrial probe designed for demanding commercial and industrial applications.

Engineers frequently combine this sensor with an in-head temperature transmitter to deliver an industry-standard 4-20mA output across a selectable range. This setup simplifies integration with existing machinery and process control equipment. The device accurately measures liquid and gas temperatures across a wide range, from -75°C to +250°C. Technicians can efficiently mount the probe into ducting, pipework, tanks, and pressure vessels using compression fittings or thermowells (thermopockets).

The PT100 sensor remains the primary industry standard for precise thermal measurement across industrial, laboratory, and commercial applications. As a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD), the PT100 relies on the predictable relationship between platinum’s electrical resistance and temperature. With a baseline resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C, high-quality RTD sensors provide exceptional accuracy, long-term stability, and repeatability compared to standard sensing elements.

Manufacturers can customize this probe to meet specific needs—including custom lengths, specialized diameters, or higher accuracy classes—upon request prior to ordering.

Thermocouple vs. RTD Dynamics

Unlike an RTD, a thermocouple generates a small voltage (millivolts) via the Seebeck effect at the junction of two dissimilar metals. For instance, operators commonly deploy Type J thermocouples (Iron-Constantan) in vacuum environments, plastics processing, and medium-temperature applications up to 750°C because they offer fast response times and low initial cost, though they lack the fine precision of a PT100 sensor.

For non-contact requirements—such as scanning moving machinery or hazardous materials—infrared temperature sensors measure thermal radiation directly instead of relying on physical heat transfer.

How Resistance Temperature Detectors Work

An RTD temperature sensor operates by measuring changes in the electrical resistance of a pure metal element as ambient temperature fluctuates. Instrument designers prefer platinum due to its chemical inertness, linear resistance-temperature response, and broad operational range.

PT100 vs. PT1000 Temperature Sensors

While industrial processes specified the PT100 most frequently, the PT1000 temperature sensor operates on the exact same principles, carrying a baseline resistance of 1000 ohms at 0°C.

  • PT100: Fits 3-wire and 4-wire configuration circuits best, where the measuring instrument directly compensates for lead-wire resistance.

  • PT1000: Performs best in 2-wire setups or low-power battery-operated devices, as its higher base resistance reduces the proportional impact of lead-wire resistance
