Key Functions of the Ceramic Cup Nozzle :

• Laminar Gas Shielding: Creates a uniform, non-turbulent column of shielding gas that isolates the hot weld puddle and tungsten from oxygen and nitrogen.

• Thermal Insulation: Protects the internal torch head assembly, collet body, and gas diffuser from extreme radiant heat generated by the electric arc.

• Tungsten Extension Control: Dictates how far the tungsten electrode can extend past the edge of the cup while maintaining adequate gas coverage.

1. Standard Collet Body Cups :

• Mechanism: Gas exits the collet body through a few small ports, entering the cup with turbulent air flow.

• Characteristics: Prone to air swirling and suction of ambient air if tungsten stick-out exceeds 1 to 2 times the electrode diameter.

• Best Use: General repair, short stick-out welds, and cost-effective everyday shop tasks.

2. Gas Lens Ceramic Cups :

• Mechanism: Contains layered fine stainless steel mesh screens inside the body to straighten gas flow.

• Characteristics: Produces a strictly laminar, uniform stream of gas. Allows tungsten stick-out up to 3–6 times the electrode diameter (e.g., sticking out up to 1 inch).

• Best Use: Stainless steel, titanium, inside tight fillet joints, and walking-the-cup pipe welding techniques.
